For more information about the origins and characteristics of this design, visit the DH550 design page.

This design was commissioned by a composite builder in Europe, who has various moulds completed. His backer for the project withdrew for financial reasons, leaving the project incomplete. If interested in picking up where he left off with the current builder, please contact Dudley by email to be connected with the builder.

The composite build is more complex than the plywood build, requires more specialized skills and it will cost more to build the main structure. If you don't have the skills available to build the composite version then please opt for the plywood DH550.

An alternative option for those who want to build this composite version is to purchase components from the builder for owner completion. They can be supplied in three major parts for one day assembly into the complete hull and deck structure.

The main differences between this design and the DH550 are:-

~ The stern has been extended aft of the aft beam.

~ The sheer detail has been modified using a narrow raised sheer panel and modified deck camber.

~ Construction materials are foam sandwich with options of glass or carbon laminates, with Kevlar tape reinfocements at daggerboard casings and carbon composite shroud chainplates.

The DH550 has proven itself as a speedy and capable ocean cruiser, with multiple crossings of the Atlantic and Pacific. One of those crossings involved attacks from a pod of orcas when approaching Gibralter. They broke both sheer pins that attached the steering tillers to the rudder shafts, without inflicting structural damage to hulls nor rudders.
