DUDLEY DIX YACHT DESIGN

Builders with whom we have worked

HOUT BAY YACHTS

Brian Alcock, who owned Hout Bay Yachts, was my first customer. We were friends from our university days and he commissioned the Pratique 35 design when he wanted to build a new boat for family cruising. After cruising he returned to Cape Town and started Hout Bay Yachts about 1985.

Under Brian's hand, Hout Bay Yachts became one of the most competent and accomplished steel boatbuilding yards in South Africa. He ran it with a small but capable staff on the mountainside above Hout Bay, the village where I lived and worked. He commissioned most of the traditional steel designs that I drew, from the Hout Bay 30 through to the Hout Bay 50. Hout Bay Yachts built 22 boats, all of them to our designs.

These photographs show some of the many boats built by Hout Bay Yachts during our long association. Unfortunately, bad health caused Brian to close Hout Bay Yachts, so the yard is no longer available to build boats.
