~ Passenger ferry |
This was a cooperative design between this office and that of powerboat man, Bob van Niekerk. The basis of the concept is the production GRP hull design of the 22m Bobkat, onto which we married an aluminum superstructure designed for general excursion work. The layout used optimises the available space to make her suitable for sightseeing, corporate and party excursions, ferry and restaurant use. She has large enclosed areas on her lower deck, with all-round viewing for when the weather turns foul. At the forward end of the accommodation she has a bandstand/disco area and at the aft end is the servery/bar, convenient to both the interior and the aft deck. Her aft deck provides open areas which offer partial protection from the elements and her upper deck provides a large sundeck for good weather viewing or sun basking, as does the foredeck. From her aft deck there are two sets of built-in steps down to swim /dive platforms at the stern, for access to tenders or for dive charters. |
The upper level includes the pilothouse which has good all-round visibility, with dual control stations against the sides for maximum control in tight situations. Both sides there are doors giving access to the wings, which are roofed over and baricaded off from the public sundeck area to prevent passengers from obstructing the crew. Powering is by a pair of 1200hp Catterpiller diesels driving waterjets, the installations designed by Bob van Niekerk She is also suitable for high speed passenger ferry work, operating at 30+ knots. She is fitted with tunnel foils which provide lift to reduce fuel costs and improve performance at the top end. |
Passenger ferry layout |
Having a custom-built aluminum superstructure, each boat can be customised to suit the needs of a particular client, with the accommodation stretched as needed to adjust passenger capacity. The layout shown here has seating for 86 passengers in the existing design. For a dedicated ferry this can be increased to around 150 passengers through redesign and elimination of unneeded features. The vessel pictured above is "Sea Princess", owned and operated by Waterfront Charters out of Table Bay's Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. |
