This design was commissioned by circum-navigator passing through Cape Town, to be his boat for the next time round. She was required to be a go-anywhere yacht of modern concept. Construction is steel, designed to the ABS scantling rules for ocean racing yachts. This allows unnecesary weight to be trimmed out where loadings are not high while placing strength into the structure in high load areas. She is robust, using 4mm plate in the flat topside plating and 5mm in the bottom and radiused chine. She can also be built of 4mm plate throughout with extra stringers, for a weight saving of approximately 450kg. The design waterline has been stretched out as long as is practical to carry the displacement and maintain performance. |
The hull has been shaped for ease of construction, using a single radiused chine configuration, giving a round bilge hull shape within the capabilities of an amateur. Two keel configurations are available, a 1,8m fin keel and a 1,45m wing keel. The aft cockpit version has a low wedge deck over most of the length, faired into a flush foredeck. The cockpit is deepset with comfortable coamings and good protection. Two steering systems have been detailed, one being a conventional cable system and the other a shaft mounted rack and pinion wheel steerer, with the rudder tube passing through from hull bottom to cockpit sole. The centre cockpit version has a conventional trunk cabin, with the cockpit positioned over the engine. The steering system is cable type. Interior layouts are comfortable and worked around the central engine position, giving good access for maintenance. The aft cockpit version has alternatives which give two or three double sleeping cabins and the centre cockpit version has three double cabins. |

The double spreader marconi cutter rig is probably the most efficient cruising rig for this size of boat and, proportioned as it is, will keep her moving in all airs. She is drawn with a modest wardrobe of headsails but could be fitted with roller furling as an alternative. All round, this design gives a sound boat for relatively fast cruising wherever her owners may want to go. It is also available as the Dix 43 Pilot. For a smaller boat of similar concept see the Dix 38. |

Testimonial from Julian Putley, owner of Dix 43 "Starry Night II", who commissioned this design.
"I am delighted with the yacht's performance on all points of sail and in all conditions. She is extremely well balanced, we have hardly touched the wheel in the last 15 days, the Aries doing all the work." Follow these links to print or download:- |
