Due to an overload of work, our custom service is not available until we have caught up with the backlog.

In addition to offering our stock designs for sale "off the shelf", we offer to draw modifications to those stock designs to suit your needs. That is how we have come to have so many variations for some designs. Each variation was commissioned by a client for whom the basic design was close to but not exactly what he or she needed.

The cost of drawing a modification will depend on the extent of the work involved. If you like the basic concept of one of our boats but need a change, please contact us for a quote for the work.

If you like the style of our work but we have no design anywhere near suitable, the alternative is to commission a design drawn to suit your own needs. The custom design fee is normally about 6-8% of the cost of building the boat if using a professional boatbuilder, including all labour and material. It is normally necessary to estimate the construction cost to establish a fixed fee ahead of the start of the project. Payment of the fee is split over the period of the design in accordance with an agreed payment schedule, for example as follows:-

10% on commissioning the design
10% when the proposals are ready for submission
20% on completion of lines and offsets
15% on completion of structural design
15% on completion of interior design
15% on completion of mechanical, deck and rig design
15% on completion of design

This schedule may be adjusted to suit the type or size of boat involved.

The cost of buying a stock design is normally between 1 and 2% of the cost of having the boat built by a professional yard. The custom design fee is a large increase over this cost but is a small portion of the cost of the boat. For the increase of around 5% in the overall cost you will have a boat which better suits your needs. You may even find that you will get what you want at a lower overall cost than taking a larger stock design because it is available.

The custom design process starts with the client supplying a good idea of exactly what is desired in the boat, its appearance, layout, performance etc, ie the concept that he has in mind. If this is not done the design process can go off at a tangent.

From this information and discussions with the client we will prepare design proposals for submission to the client. The proposals will comprise a drawing or drawings showing the profile, layout and approximate hull sections and a text describing what we have drawn and why it has been done in that manner. The client can come back with requested modifications which, if practical, will be incorporated into the proposals. When the proposals suit the client's ideas they will be signed up as the basis on which the design progresses to completion.

The custom design process is spread over a long period. Basic drawings are supplied initially to obtain construction estimates. Detailing is prepared at a rate to keep ahead of construction. We normally have a number of designs on the board at any one time so it may be impractical to work continuously on one design from start to completion. We cycle through the various designs as required to stay ahead of the builders.

We attempt to provide as professional a design service as possible. This includes supplying full back-up service by email or telephone throughout construction.

Two of our clients have come back to us a number of times for custom designs over the years. One of them, a professional builder 6000 miles away, has commissioned 4 new designs and the other, a local builder, has commissioned 7 new designs or variations on existing designs which he had previously commissioned as custom designs.

We hope to number you among our clients before too long.
